Our Club
Nestled in beautiful Abino Bay on the shores of Lake Erie, the Buffalo Canoe Club (‘BCC’) is one of the area's finest private yacht Clubs. Established in 1882, the Club offers its Members unparalleled opportunities for sailing and recreation. The Club is very proud of its high-quality sailing program and has produced many champion sailors, earning a reputation for being one of the best places for a child to learn how to sail. The BCC is a world-class venue for sailing regattas and has hosted many prestigious national and international events over the years, welcoming thousands of sailors, and their families from around the world.

Mission
The BCC Junior Activities (‘JA’) Department is committed to providing high-quality experiences in a fun, safe, and positive environment. We offer Sailing, Tennis, Swimming and Day Camps throughout the summer for children of all ages and skill levels.
This program is targeted towards high school students that are interested in fulfilling their required volunteer hours as well as graining valuable experience and a first step on the path to becoming a camp counsellor or coach in the future.
 
Junior Activities Program
The JA program offers services to both Club Members and the public. Our programs typically accommodate 350+ children ranging in age from 4 -17 years old throughout the summer. The program runs for 8-9 weeks from the end of June to the middle of August. We have a dedicated team of coaches and counsellors as well as a team of volunteers to assist in program execution. This is where our Leadership Program volunteers come into action.
 
Leadership Program Overview
The Leadership Program is designed to help youth gain valuable experience and expose them to “life as a camp counsellor or coach.” The participants of the Leadership program will assist with the camps and programing through the planning, participation, and facilitation of daily and weekly activities. 
 
This position is intended for high school students who are looking to fulfill volunteer hours while gaining experience in the summer camp atmosphere. This position will involve working along side camp counsellors and coaches to learn from them while assisting in the delivery of programs. 
 
Successful candidates will have a passion for sports, camp activities, the outdoors, a desire to learn, and the desire to create lasting memories. They will learn the intricacies of the being a camp counsellor/coach, planning and executing activities, problem solving and developing valuable communication skills. Candidates should present a professional, friendly, and mature attitude in dealing with Members, non-members, Managers, and staff.
 
Reporting to the Camp Counsellors and Coaches, the successful candidate will be a highly motivated team player.
 
Hours of Operation
June 24th– August 23rd
Monday – Friday, 8:45am – 4:00pm
**Candidates will be scheduled for weeks, or days based on their availability and the requirements of the programs
 
Overall Responsibilities include but are not limited to
  • Participating/interacting in the daily and weekly camp activities
  • Being outside and active for long periods of time.
  • Work with the team of coaches and counsellors to plan and execute summer programs
  • Under the guidance of the coaches and counsellors, come up with a game, activity, or craft that you will lead and facilitate to the group.
  • Work under the supervision and guidance of the counsellors, coaches, and Club Program Manager and follow the Club’s constitution and policies as they relate to staff.
  • Report all health and safety concerns, hazards, or suggestions promptly to Camp Counsellors/Coaches.
  • Report all injuries promptly to counsellors/coaches so that an “incident report” can be filled out.
 
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Enrolled in secondary school (must be 13+ years old)
  • No previous volunteer or work experience necessary
  • First aid and/or babysitting course completed considered an asset
  • Ability to be at the Club during the day  
  • Creative thinking skills welcomed
